Transfer of Credit

After at least one semester of successful study, a student may request transfer of credits for applicable courses that he or she took at another accredited institution or at Georgetown University before enrolling in the Graduate School. Courses taken as a special student or courses taken as a regular student through the School for Summer and Continuing Education do not require transfer, but may require separate approval.

Here are the Graduate School's rules and restrictions for such requests. The detailed rules may be found here.

  • Graduate School rules allow only the transfer of up to 25% of the credits required for graduation, i.e. 7.5 credits for this program. In practice, this means that you may request transfer for up to three three-credit courses. Effective fall 2009, no more than 25% of all credits required may be transferred or taken through the Consortium. That is, at least seven courses must be taken at Georgetown University.
  • Only courses in which you received a B or better may be transferred.
  • Only courses which have not already been and will not be used for another degree may be transferred.
  • Only courses that were taken less than seven years ago are acceptable for transfer.
The request has to be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS).  Grades for transferred courses are not counted when calculating the student's overall QPI.

If you would like to have credits transferred from another institution,

  • talk to your advisor about your plans. He/she will help you fit the proposed transfer into your overall plan of study.
  • Then contact the program and set up a meeting with the DGS. Be prepared to explain what was done in the course you took (e.g. write a two paragraph description, send a web link to the current version of the course, write about the textbook(s) that were used and the portions that were covered, show a copy of the final exam), and what grade you received. We would like to know (or determine with you) for which portion of our degree requirement the transferred credit should be substituted.
  • Enter a formal request on this web form on the Graduate School's page for current students' forms.  Enter your 9 digit GoCard number (not your NetID) and proceed. Click the button for "Transfer of Credit" and fill in the reasons (basically the explanation that the DGS wanted to see). If you want to request a transfer for two courses, do it separately for both courses.  The DGS will be notified and will approve (or disapprove) the application electronically. Detailed instructions are in this pdf-file. There is also a paper form available. If you have talked to the DGS beforehand, your request should be approved without a hitch, of course.
In general, a non-math elective course may be substituted relatively easily. Credit for a math/stat elective may be transferred if the course was at a comparable level and either has a direct counterpart in our program's course offerings or could be offered in our program in the judgment of the DGS. Credit transfer for a core course will only be approved if the other course is very similar to the corresponding course in our program in content and level. Obviously, credit can only be transferred for a course that was not already taken at Georgetown, and a student should not take a similar course at Georgetown after the credit has been transferred. The decision rests with the DGS.

If the transfer credit is not on the transcript that is on file with your application, you also have to send a paper copy of the transcript to the Graduate School at
