If you are planning to graduate this semester ...
The Graduate School has a website with instructions for students who plan to graduate.
The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences awards master's and doctoral degrees at the end of each month, with the exception of June. All students applying to graduate must file an Application for Graduate Degree to be considered for graduation and to be eligible to participate in Commencement.
The application must be filed by the first working day of the month in which you wish to graduate. This means e.g. that you must file this appIication before the end of November if you want to graduate at the end of December. If you plan to graduate in February, March, April, or May and wish to participate in the Commencement exercises in May, you have to file this application no later than the last day of the add/drop period in January. Otherwise a diploma will not be ready for you at the Commencement. You will be able to graduate, of course.
An application for a degree is good for two months (e.g. until the end of November if you file it in early October), and it will expire at the end of that time window.
There are additional rules for international students. For example, international students have to complete their studies as quickly as reasonably possible and cannot postpone their graduation past the completion of their studies. Please consult the Office of International Programs for details.
More information may be found in the Graduate Bulletin.
Before you hand in the application:
- Meet with your advisor. He or she would like to help you make sure that all degree requirements have been met.
- Contact the Director of Graduate Studies to arrange for an exit interview. Bring a printout of your transcript, since he will have to sign off on your application to graduate.
- Visit Georgetown University's MBNA Career Education Center in the Leavey Center.
- Send us your resume (pdf or Word format) if you would like us to share it with potential employers.
... and stay in touch!
